SWIM STARTERS, 6 months - 3 years

Stage A: Water Discovery
Parents accompany children in Stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.
1 instructor : 12 swimmers

Stage B: Water Exploration
In Stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatics skills.
1 instructor : 12 swimmers

SWIM BASICS, 3-12 years old

Stage 1: Water Acclimation
Students develop comfort with under water exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in Stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student's future progress in swimming.
Preschool ages 3-5: 1 instructor : 4 swimmers.
School ages 6-12: 1 instructor : 5 swimmers.

 

Stage 2: Water Movement
In Stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.
Preschool ages 3-5: 1 instructor : 4 swimmers.
School ages 6-12: 1 instructor : 5 swimmers.

Stage 3: Water Stamina
In Stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.
Preschool ages 3-5: 1 instructor : 5 swimmers.
School ages 6-12: 1 instructor : 6 swimmers.

SWIM STROKES, 3-12 years old

Stage 4: Stroke Introduction
In Stage 4, students develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breast stroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary back stroke.
Preschool ages 3-5: 1 instructor : 5 swimmers.
School ages 6-12: 1 instructor : 6 swimmers.

Stage 5: Stroke Development
In Stage 5, students work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and side stroke.
School ages 6-12: 1 instructor : 7 swimmers

Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics
In Stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.
School ages 6-12: 1 instructor : 7 swimmers

Teen/Adult 13+ years old

Teen/Adult
This class is for beginner, little or no water experience. Beginners will learns floating (back and front), introduction of freestyle and elementary backstroke. Intermediate swimmers will refine freestyle and elementary backstroke. Learn sidestroke, breaststroke and deep-water swimming. This is a self paced class.

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

We offer year-round private swimming lessons for both adults and children, which is perfect if you prefer individual instructor attention. Maybe you started learning to swim as a child, but never quite mastered it? Maybe you’re afraid of the water? Maybe your child is a little nervous about learning to swim, so you’d like to ensure they have special attention in a one-on-one environment? Whatever the reason, we’re here to help you learn to swim confidently, with a certified and supportive instructor, so you can enjoy the beautiful bodies of water in our communities – whether it’s a pool, lake, or our majestic Pacific Ocean. Our private lessons are tailored to your individual skill level and are 30 minutes OR 1 hour long. 

We ask that you arrive 10 minutes early to change and rinse off in our locker rooms before entering the pool.

SWIM TEAM

The Y is the starting point for many youth to learn about becoming and staying active, and developing healthy habits they will carry with them throughout their lives. Our swim team embraces the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. Furthermore, the team seeks to provide opportunities for social and emotional development, a physical and recreational outlet, and an atmosphere of good sportsmanship, teamwork and fun for all. Our dedicated and experienced coaches will provide each swimmer with the maximum opportunity for development. 

Requirements

This program is for advanced / intermediate swimmers only. To be eligible to join the swim team you must be able to pass the ray or minnow group swim lesson level offered through the YMCA. If you have not taken swim lessons through the YMCA a swim evaluation will be required before you can sign up. This program is for advanced intermediate swimmers that can swim 50+ yards of freestyle with side breathing, and backstroke.

AQUA AEROBICS

Our water exercise classes are a fun way to use the resistance and buoyancy of water to condition your muscles and improve your cardiovascular fitness, strength and flexibility. By employing strengthening exercises and stretching techniques, these water aerobics and fitness classes help to increase your body’s tone and range of motion.

Water fitness is perfect if you’re looking for an enjoyable, low impact workout. If you’re looking to challenge yourself without putting stress on your joints or just like being in the water, you’ll definitely enjoy our selection of water exercise classes. Our certified instructors enthusiastically lead groups through Shallow and Deep Water Aerobics, Aqua Fit, and Aqua Zumba classes.


MEMBER LAP & OPEN SWIM

Lap Swim:  Spare your joints and get an impactful cardiovascular workout by lap swimming! The benefits are immense. To help maintain a safe and nurturing environment, we encourage lane sharing and circle swimming if more than one person is using a lane. This will create a good flow and allow you to have your own space for clean strokes. We also provide equipment to help vary the challenge and make lap swimming more enjoyable.

Open Swim: Bring the whole family and enjoy time splashing around in the pool during our recreational swim time! Swimmers are free to use pool noodles on a first come first serve basis. As you enjoy the relaxing nature of being in the water, you’ll elevate your heart rate, burn calories and work-out two major muscle groups (arms and legs) simultaneously – all while having fun!


CPR COURSE

At the Lakewood Family YMCA, we are certified by the American Red Cross to teach CPR for the Professional Rescuer which will cover adult, child, infant and two person rescue. It will also address airway management, bag valve use, automated external defibrillator (AED) training, administering emergency oxygen, blood borne pathogens (BBP), and first aid. All participants who successfully complete the written exam and skills demonstration will receive a Red Cross CPRO course completion card that is valid for two years. Manuals for this class can be downloaded from the Red Cross website at no cost

LIFEGUARD COURSE

At the Lakewood Family YMCA, we are certified by the American Red Cross to teach Lifeguarding courses that cover all Lifeguard shallow and deep water skills, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer which will cover adult, child, infant and two person rescue.
