YOUTH & GOVERNMENT
"Democracy must be learned by each generation."
YMCA Youth and Government is a six-month leadership program in which high school delegates role play various positions within the California State Legislature and the State Court systems. Within their delegations,Y&G participants create bills which are submitted to the Model Legislature, the primary conference occurring in February where over 3,000 Y&G delegates from across the state take over the capital in Sacramento to present their bills.
Weekly Meetings: Delegates meet once a week to discuss issues facing California, as well as ways to implement their solutions through the legislative and judicial processes. Delegates will write and debate bills, prepare briefs, practice public speaking, and make new friends.

Looking to get more involved in your community? Want to set yourself apart on your college application and resume? Need to complete service learning hours for school? The Los Altos YMCA is a great place to get work experience while also being a part of a supportive family!
High School Y Teen Leaders complete an internship at the Los Altos Family YMCA for at least one season (Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer) where they get experience with a variety of program areas from academic enrichment/childcare and kids club to day camp, Welcome Center, and community events!
We are always looking for outstanding teens to join us! Please fill out a Y Teen Leader application form and drop it off at the Welcome Center at the Los Altos Family YMCA.
Counselor in Training
CITs will learn leadership skills and experience what it really takes to be a counselor by shadowing and assisting camp counselors in daily activities during Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Camp. For each week of camp, CITs are assigned to help lead elementary-aged groups in games and activities under the supervision of a Unit Lead Counselor.
This is a great way for Teens to prepare for a future job in camp, child care, teaching, and beyond. CITs will learn valuable work and life skills including: leadership, patience, time management, self-discipline, communication, independence, and how to be a positive role model. The CIT program is overseen by the Camp Director, Cole McDaniel. Learn more about the CIT program and how to register on our camp page!
