YOUTH & GOVERNMENT
"Democracy must be learned by each generation."
The Greater Long Beach Youth & Government program gives youth the opportunity to discuss some of the most pressing issues we face within our nation and overall community. Participants will lean how to improve their public speaking skills, research and writing and have the opportunity to be mentored by local officials within assigned program areas. Participants will attend Camp Oakes in Big Bear for two weekend conferences all which lead to the final conference in beautiful Downtown Long Beach, where they will take over the Long Beach City Council Chambers and Courts.
Weekly Meetings: Delegates meet, outdoors physically-distanced, once a week from 5-6pm to discuss issues facing California, as well as ways to implement their solutions through the legislative and judicial processes. Delegates will write and debate bills, prepare briefs, practice public speaking, and make new friends.
Counselor in Training
CITs will learn leadership skills and experience what it really takes to be a counselor by shadowing and assisting camp counselors in daily activities during Summer Camp. For each week of camp, CITs are assigned to help lead elementary-aged groups in games and activities under the supervision of a Unit Lead Counselor. Teens must attend orientation each Monday of their camp week from 8:30-9am.
This is a great way for Teens to prepare for a future job in camp, child care, teaching, and beyond. CITs will learn valuable work and life skills including: leadership, patience, time management, self-discipline, communication, independence, and how to be a positive role model. The CIT program is overseen by the Teen/Sports Coordinator Rafi Howard as well as camp staff. To register for the CIT program click here!
