Healthy Lifestyle Programs

The focus of Healthy Lifestyle programs is to develop the physical body with the ultimate goal that participants will enjoy happy, productive lives allowing them growth in spirit and mind. These programs promote self-esteem and good health in a supportive environment. Participants are provided the opportunity to serve and become active members of the community.

Membership Opportunities

Membership at the YMCA provides affordable access to all individuals living and working in the community to programs and facilities that develop one's character, relationships and skills. The YMCA has a variety of classes and programs to meet each individual's needs. Facilities include lap swimming pools, racquetball courts, free weights, cybex equipment, lifecycles, rowing machines, treadmills, stairmasters, all levels of aerobics, and basketball courts.

Fitness Orientation with YMCA Trainer The YMCA offers fitness orientations to make sure you start your work-out program feeling comfortable and safe. Specific fitness facilities and programs vary at each of the five YMCA's.

12-Week Personalized Fitness Program Feel confindent, stay motivated, feel successful, feel comfortable, and become Committed to exercise through the routine of a structured program. Offered at the Lakewood YMCA.

Aerobics

Step Aerobics
Step Aerobics is a fitness class designed for body conditioning and a great cardiovascular workout. High intensity, low impact workout or introductory classes are available. This class involves stepping up and down on an adjustable platform while performing, upper body movements. Offered at Lakewood, Fairfield and Downtown YMCA's.

Low Impact Aerobics
Low Impact Aerobics is a high intensity workout, without the impact stress to the feet, legs, and spine. One foot stays on the floor at all times as you move through upper and lower body movements. Avaliable through Lakewood and Fairfield YMCA's.
Look for Hi Energy/Low Impact classes.

Pilates & Yoga

Mat Pilates
This is a slow pace movement class. Pilates strengthen and tone as you become more flexible. Offered at the Lakewood and Los Altos YMCA.

Yoga
Move fluidly through postures as the flow of your breath deepens your mind/body connection. The movements combine stretching and strengthening to increase flexibility and relax your body. Offered at Los Altos.

Family Yoga
A chance for the whole family to participate in an exercise activity. Yoga poses modified to accommodate parents and kids. Childern 8 years and older, with the ability to maintain a level of focus, are welcome; instructor approval required for 8 years and younger. Offered at Los Altos YMCA.

Hatha Yoga
Emphasizes physical and mental relaxation, controlled breathing, balance, proper posture, alignment and flexibility. Develop a keen sense of body/mind awareness. All levels available. Offered at the Lakewood YMCA.

Power Yoga
Focus is on strength development, proper alignment for maximum flexibility and transitions between poses. Offered at the Lakewood YMCA.

Target Classes

Power Legs
Designed for the advanced weight trainers who want to see results in the quadriceps, hamstrings and calves. Available at the Los Altos. YMCA

Body Sculpting
An overall body workout using tubing, hand weights, stability balls and mats. Move to the music while improving your muscle tone and endurance. Great for all levels. Offered at Los Altos YMCA.

Muscle & Core Condioning
Two levels of weight lifiting and core stabilizaton workout. Let our staff guide and challenge you to push your limits. Offered at Los Altos YMCA.

Hard Core Abs
Increase your core strength focusing on the abdominals and lower back. Offered at Los Altos YMCA.

Fitness With A Beat

Hip Hop
High energy, cardio dance clsass. You'll learn basic steps and moves from this dance genre and put together combinations in every class. Beginners welcome Children 5-15 years of age are allowed. Offered at Los Altos YMCA.

Polynesian Dance Aerobics
A fun Cardio-Polynesian workout incorporating hips and lower body. Strengthens core stability. Challenges balance and agility while listening to music from the islands. Offered at Fairfield YMCA.

Cardio Salsa
Open to all dancers and nondancers who want to spice up thir fitness routine with low impact salsa dance moves. Partner not required. Offered at Fairfield YMCA.

Belly Dancing
Learn dance techniques, muscle control and styling of this fascinating dance form. Offered at Fairfield YMCA.

Water Exercise

Aqua Aerobics- Aqua Fit
Get the same benefits of aerobics while using the resistance and buoyancy of the water. Great for pregnant women, seniors and people suffering from knee injuries, as well as those with arthritis.
Available at the Lakewood, Los Cerritos, Fairfield and Los Altos YMCA's.

Deep Water Aerobics
Class is held in the deep end of the pool using equipment. Some swim skills required. Moderate to intense workout. Avaliable at the Lakewood and Los Cerritos YMCA's.

Martial Arts

Kenpo Karate
Kenpo Karate is a fun and exciting way to gain self-confidence, build self-esteem and improve self discipline. Children and adults will have the opportunity to advance to different levels and degrees.
Available at Downtown YMCA.

Tae Kwon Do
Training in the art of Tae Kwon Do is more than just kicking and punching. The study of technique is not the task of one day or of one year, it is rather the study of a lifetime. The exercise of Tae Kwon Do will develop strength and flexibility of the body, patience, concentration, and attention to detail. As well as, develop quick reflexes, spirit, humility, inner awareness and confidence. For ages 5 and up.

Active Older Adults

Y's Way to Fitness
The national YMCA class and first adult fitness class of it's kind. A great class for beginning exercisers, seniors, or anyone wanting a lower level of exercise conditioning. All classes will meet in the gym.
Available at Lakewood and Los Cerritos YMCA's

Fall Proof & Balance
Reduce your risk of falling by improving your kinesthetic receptors, and gain back your confidence in balance. You will focus on stability, balance, hand-eye coordination, leg strength and body awareness. (Recommended for anyone desiring to improve thir balance and stabiltiy confidence.) Offered at Los Altos YMCA.

Older Adult Body Sculpt
Improve overall muscle tone, strength and balance using light weights, exercise tubing, rubber balls, and medicine balls. Class runs 45 minues- great for all fitness levels. Available at the Los Altos YMCA.

Older Adult Circuit
Enjoy music and a social atmosphere while improving your fitness level. Move from station to station performing a balanced selection of full body exercises. A 45 minute workout - great for all fitness levels. Available at the Los Altos YMCA.

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program
SilverSneakers is the perfect class for older adult and rehab exercisers looking to improve their strength for daily activities. As a participant, you'll feel good and have fun while moving through a variety of exercises designed to increase your strength, balance, range of motion, endurance and physical skills required for daily living. Offered to all YMCA members at Lakewood and Los Cerritos YMCA and the program is free of charge to all Secure Horizons/PacifiCare insurance holders.

Active Older Adult Activities
At the Lakewood and Los Cerritos YMCA's...
The YMCA has very active Senior programs. Seniors join exercise classes together, and meet for refreshments after class. Throughout the year they go on field trips such as baseball games, Museum Trips, Picnics, Hollywood Bowl, Television tapings, and also have been known to visit Laughlin and Las Vegas. Call the Lakewood or Los Cerritos YMCA's for up to date details on upcoming field trips. Don't miss out on the fun!!
