Dr. James Naismith, center, invented "basket ball" at Springfield College in Springfield, MA in 1891 when he was a graduate student studying to be a YMCA Director. Future Y directors didn't like indoor activities such as leapfrog and tumbling, so P. E. teacher Jim Naismith came up with a new indoor winter game by hanging peach baskets to the bottom level of a gymnasium and developed 13 rules - basketball.
